Cataract can be defined as complete or partial clouding of the ocular lens. Cataracts are leading cause of blindness in patients, mostly targeting at old age. In this condition, visual field becomes fuzzy or blurry. A cataract affects lens which is responsible for clear and sharp images by eyes. As people advance in their age going into old age, dead cells accumulate in the lens capsule making lens go cloudy and vision no longer remains clear and sharp.
Symptoms include blurred vision, double vision, impaired night visibility, and color vision fading, etc. Three major types of cataracts are nuclear cataracts, cortical cataracts, and subcapsular cataracts.
Cataracts can be diagnosed by retinal examination, tonometry testing, slit lamp examination, and visual acuity testing.
Treatments involve glasses prescription, lens removal surgical procedure, lens replacement surgery, IOLs, and regular ophthalmic examinations.
